The challenge is to find meaningful and robust indicators to quantify ecosystem services, measure changes in demand and supply and predict future direction. This chapter addresses the basic requirements for collecting such observations and data on ecosystem services. Societies are deeply embedded within ecosystems, depending on and influencing the ecosystem services they produce. The different types of ecosystem services provisioning, regulating, and cultural , and their different components supply, delivery, contribution to well-being, and value can be monitored at global to local scales.
Europe [2,3] and the UK . Here, we review the issue and present a perspective basedtwo terms biodiversity and ecosystem services are usedalmost synonymously, implying that they are effectivelythe same thing and that if ecosystemservices aremanagedwell, biodiversity will be retained and vice versa. At theother extreme, biodiversity is itself sometimes regarded asan ecosystem service, and the maintenance of wild species especially those of conservation concern is treated as oneof the things that ecosystem management can and shoulddeliver. Because ecosystem assessments are intended to provideguidance for ecosystem management, the confusion overhow to treat biodiversity is potentially a serious problem. Integrating biodiversity and ecosystem services BES has been viewed as an appropriate approach to identifying conservation priorities. Taking Xishuangbanna tropical region in Southwest China, different BES s habitat quality [used as a proxy for biodiversity], carbon storage, and water yield were quantified using the InVEST model and conservation hotspots from , , and were identified by overlapping and ranking the service layers. Results showed that BES s areas were unevenly distributed. High habitat quality and carbon storage areas located in the eastern part of the region were mainly occupied by broad-leaved forest, while high water yield areas were covered by grassland and tropical forests. Recognized hotspots were primarily composed of the broad-leaved forest and shrub grassland.
The relationship between biodiversity and the rapidly expanding research and policy field of ecosystem services is confused and is damaging efforts to create.
