Signals and systems are abstract concepts of a wide variety of physical variables and processes in various fields in engineering and sciences. Examples of signals include as temperature over time or space, sound speech, music, etc over time, images over space, etc. A signal carries information and contains energy. Different types of signals: Analog signal : a function , continuous in amplitude, of a continuous independent variable e. Discrete signal : a function , continuous in amplitude, but defined only at a set of discrete values of the independent variable,. Digital signal : a discrete signal with quantized finite amplitude values.

This section of the Signals and Systems book will be talking about probability, random signals, and noise. This book will not, however, attempt to teach the basics of probability, because there are dozens of resources both on the internet at large, and on Wikipedia mathematics bookshelf for probability and statistics. This tutorial covers the basics of signals and system necessary for understanding the concepts of digital image processing. In electrical engineering, the fundamental quantity of representing some information is called a signal. It does not matter what the information is i-e: Analog or digital information. In mathematics, a signal is a function that conveys some information. In fact any quantity measurable through time over space or any higher dimension can be taken as a signal.

A signal is a description of how one parameter varies with another parameter. For instance, voltage changing over time in an electronic circuit, or brightness varying with distance in an image. A system is any process that produces an output signal in response to an input signal.
