Data mining has opened a world of possibilities for business. This field of computational statistics compares millions of isolated pieces of data and is used by companies to detect and predict consumer behaviour.

Top 14 useful applications for data mining

The fact that big data and analytics change the business and science world is undeniable. But how? What are data mining applications, examples, and benefits? Data scientists already saw how machine learning and the uses of data mining techniques deliver results. Simply, data mining is the process of finding patterns, trends, and anomalies within large data sets to take adequate decisions and to predict outcomes. Now, there is an enormous amount of data available anywhere, anytime.

This chapter describes Data Mining in finance by discussing financial tasks, specifics of methodologies and techniques in this Data Mining area. It includes time dependence, data selection, forecast horizon, measures of success, quality of patterns, hypothesis evaluation, problem ID, method profile, attribute-based and relational methodologies. The second part of the chapter discusses Data Mining models and practice in finance. It covers use of neural networks in portfolio management, design of interpretable trading rules and discovering money laundering schemes using decision rules and relational Data Mining methodology. The application of Data Mining DM technologies has shown an explosive growth in an increasing number of different areas of business, government and science. Two of the most important business areas are finance, in particular in banks and insurance companies, and e-business, such as web portals, e-commerce and ad management services. In spite of the close relationship between research and practice in Data Mining, it is not easy to find information on some of the most important issues involved in real world application of DM technology, from business and data understanding to evaluation and deployment. Papers often describe research that was developed without taking into account constraints imposed by the motivating application. When these issues are taken into account, they are frequently not discussed in detail because the paper must focus on the method. Therefore knowledge that could be useful for those who would like to apply the same approach on a related problem is not shared.

Introduction to Data Mining and Electronic Commerce. In the year , one of the authors of this editorial wrote an article about support versus confidence in the data mining technique, association rules. This article was presented at a conference and never formally published [22]. In the last four years this article has been downloaded nearly twenty-thousand times from an open access repository. This interest by researchers and practitioners has motivated us to write this technical editorial. The structure of this editorial will be as follows. In this section we briefly introduce data mining and electronic commerce.

Digital Fingerprinting Technology enables the content owner to exercise control on their copyrighted content by effectively identifying, tracking, monitoring and monetising it across distribution channels web, broadcast, radio, streaming, etc. In a fingerprinting algorithm, a large data item. Referral traffic is a Web term, used to denote incoming traffic on a website as a result of clicking on a URL on some other site, which is known as a referring site. Referring traffic always has a referrer website, from which this stream of traffic originates. Technically, any domain that originates and redirects traffic to your domain is known as a referring site. Using referral traffic, one can. Entrances are popularly also known as Entrance points.

Data mining is a process of discovering patterns in large data sets involving methods at the intersection of machine learning , statistics , and database systems. The term "data mining" is a misnomer , because the goal is the extraction of patterns and knowledge from large amounts of data, not the extraction mining of data itself. The book Data mining: Practical machine learning tools and techniques with Java [8] which covers mostly machine learning material was originally to be named just Practical machine learning , and the term data mining was only added for marketing reasons. The actual data mining task is the semi-automatic or automatic analysis of large quantities of data to extract previously unknown, interesting patterns such as groups of data records cluster analysis , unusual records anomaly detection , and dependencies association rule mining , sequential pattern mining. This usually involves using database techniques such as spatial indices.

With data mining , a retailer can use point-of-sale records of customer purchases to develop products and promotions to appeal to specific customer segments. Data mining holds great potential to improve health systems. It uses data and analytics to identify best practices that improve care and reduce costs. Researchers use data mining approaches like multi-dimensional databases, machine learning, soft computing, data visualization and statistics. Mining can be used to predict the volume of patients in every category. Processes are developed that make sure that the patients receive appropriate care at the right place and at the right time. Data mining can also help healthcare insurers to detect fraud and abuse.
