Mark Saltzman. Professor Saltzman's research has been formative in the fields of controlled drug delivery and tissue engineering. As a trainee in the laboratory of Professor Robert Langer at MIT, Professor Saltzman participated in some of the very earliest work in utilizing polymer scaffolds for cell transplantation with Dr Joseph Vacanti. In particular, his work applied engineering principles to understand cell mobility and migration within implantable matrices, 2 , 3 , 4 establishing a basis for quantitative design of engineered tissues. Another major focus has been the integration of drug delivery into tissue engineering and cell transplantation approaches.

A pioneer in the fields of biomaterials, nanobiotechnology, and tissue engineering, Saltzman has contributed to the design and implementation of a number of clinical technologies that have become essential to medical practice today. Saltzman received a B. As a graduate student at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology MIT , Saltzman built scaffolds that could be seeded with cells to sculpt new replacement tissues. He also created drug-impregnated implants from polymers that slowly and steadily release medicines for long periods—work that now helps patients in the form of GLIADEL, a chemotherapy-loaded polymer wafer that neurosurgeons implant in the brain to combat glioblastoma multiforme GBM , one of the most aggressive types of malignant brain tumors. He was promoted to Associate Professor in and to Professor in Laurance Fuller Chair in Chemical Engineering.
