Lipid metabolism

Lipids are large molecules and generally are not water-soluble. Like carbohydrates and protein , lipids are broken into small components for absorption. Since most of our digestive enzymes are water -based, how does the body break down fat and make it available for the various functions it must perform in the human body? The first step in the digestion of triglycerides and phospholipids begins in the mouth as lipids encounter saliva. Next, the physical action of chewing coupled with the action of emulsifiers enables the digestive enzymes to do their tasks.

Lipid metabolism is the synthesis and degradation of lipids in cells, involving the breakdown or storage of fats for energy and the synthesis of structural and functional lipids, such as those involved in the construction of cell membranes. In animals, these fats are obtained from food or are synthesized by the liver. Lipid metabolism is often considered as the digestion and absorption process of dietary fat; however, there are two sources of fats that organisms can use to obtain energy: from consumed dietary fats and from stored fat. Lipid metabolism often begins with hydrolysis , [7] which occurs with the help of various enzymes in the digestive system. Digestion is the first step to lipid metabolism, and it is the process of breaking the triglycerides down into smaller monoglyceride units with the help of lipase enzymes. Digestion of fats begin in the mouth through chemical digestion by lingual lipase. Ingested cholesterol is not broken down by the lipases and stays intact until it enters the epithelium cells of small intestine.

Digestion and Absorption of Lipids

Lipid digestion and absorption pose some special challenges. The digestive process has to break those large droplets of fat into smaller droplets and then enzymatically digest lipid molecules using enzymes called lipases. The mouth and stomach play a small role in this process, but most enzymatic digestion of lipids happens in the small intestine. From there, the products of lipid digestion are absorbed into circulation and transported around the body, which again requires some special handling since lipids are not water-soluble and do not mix with the watery blood. A few things happen in the mouth that start the process of lipid digestion. Chewing mechanically breaks food into smaller particles and mixes them with saliva.

Digestion is the chemical breakdown of the ingested food into absorbable molecules. Absorption refers to the movement of nutrients, water and electrolytes from the lumen of the small intestine into the cell, then into the blood. In this article, we will look at the digestion and absorption of carbohydrates, protein and lipids. There are three carbohydrate products which are absorbed by the small intestine; glucose , galactose and fructose. Digestion of starch is initiated in the mouth, facilitated by salivary amylase. The majority of carbohydrate digestion occurs in the small intestine.

Bile is a complex fluid containing water, electrolytes and a battery of organic molecules including bile acids, cholesterol, phospholipids and bilirubin that flows through the biliary tract into the small intestine. There are two fundamentally important functions of bile in all species:. Adult humans produce to ml of bile daily, and other animals proportionately similar amounts. The secretion of bile can be considered to occur in two stages:.

From the Mouth to the Stomach
