*Trial and error is not a method of finding the best solution, nor a method of finding all solutions.*

Trial and error is a problem solving method in which multiple attempts are made to reach a solution. It is a basic method of learning that essentially all organisms use to learn new behaviors. Trial and error is trying a method, observing if it works, and if it doesn't trying a new method. This process is repeated until success or a solution is reached. For example imagine moving a large object such as a couch into your house. You first try to move it in through the front door and it gets stuck.

People face problems every day—usually, multiple problems throughout the day. Sometimes these problems are straightforward: To double a recipe for pizza dough, for example, all that is required is that each ingredient in the recipe be doubled. Sometimes, however, the problems we encounter are more complex. For example, say you have a work deadline, and you must mail a printed copy of a report to your supervisor by the end of the business day. The report is time-sensitive and must be sent overnight. You finished the report last night, but your printer will not work today.

From organizing your movie collection to deciding to buy a house, problem-solving makes up a large part of daily life. Problems can range from small solving a single math equation on your homework assignment to very large planning your future career. In cognitive psychology , the term problem-solving refers to the mental process that people go through to discover, analyze, and solve problems. Before problem-solving can occur, it is important to first understand the exact nature of the problem itself. If your understanding of the issue is faulty, your attempts to resolve it will also be incorrect or flawed. There are a number of different ways that people go about solving a problem.

As engineers, our task is to create solutions that solve problems. For example, design a sound system to minimize feedback or determine the sonic effect of an object placed next to a microphone. Two problem-solving methods are trial-and-error and prediction using mathematics. With trial-and-error, you come up with a solution intuitively, try it out, and see what happens. Alternatively, you predict a result using math equations, or using the known properties of an object. Then test your prediction with real-world measurements.

Some complex problems can be solved by a technique that is called trial and error. Trial and error is typically good for problems where you have multiple chances to get the correct solution. In these situations, making an error can lead to disaster. Trial and error is used best when it is applied to situations that give your large amounts of time and safety to come up with a solution. In addition to this, trial and error is also a great way to gain knowledge.
